Case Study
Background
Congress approved the CG Phased Modernization Plan for seven cruisers, which, like the Cruiser Modernization (CG Mod) program, introduces new warfighting capabilities, improves material condition and readiness, replaces obsolete equipment, and reduces total ownership costs through technology insertion. Chandra Hunt, the Mugen Group founder, led the project team responsible for the modernization of one CG asset.
Problem: The US Navy Cruiser, a warship, was slated for the cruiser modernization program. This included an overhaul of various critical systems and structural reinforcement to increase the life of the warship. Our project team was tasked to complete the cruiser modification of one navy warship.
Solution: We build key relationships and worked with internal teams, stakeholders, senior executives and external clients to meet expectations and support contractual requirements. We developed a SWOT analysis to drive updated execution plans to include additional scope.
Execution: We ran into significant challenges with respect to the structural integrity of certain systems and had to account for a significant increase in scope. We instituted routine meetings to ensure all team members were aware of the issues and created special teams to increase work output in order to stay within the timeline.
Results: Increased transparency in communication practices impressed external stakeholders, in spite of the increase in scope, we exceeded cost control goals by 5% and received highest award fee score 95%.
